The grade of Chief Petty Officer was established on April 1st, 1893 for the Navy, and on the 18th of May 1920 for the US Coast Guard.Unlike Petty Officer First Class and lesser ranks, advancement to Chief Petty Officer not only carries specifications of time in services, exceptional performance review scores, and specialty exams, but also carries an additional need of peer assessment.
